The church has ancient origins. It probably dates back to the 13th century when the site contained two churches that eventually, due to their bad condition, were demolished and converted into a single building, the current one, between the 16th and 18th centuries. Over the course of time, the church underwent some changes, such as the opening of the entrance door near the sacristy and the high altar and some extension works. Other construction works were done at the end of the 19th century. It is a church with a single nave and a barrel vault; it has three altars, one of which is dedicated to St Nicholas and Sabinus. The building is located in Contrada S. Nicolò, which is accessed through the ancient wooden Gate of S. Nicolò, one of the old entrances to the town.The area also housed the Jewish ghetto of Montegiorgio between the 13th and 15th centuries.
