t was built in the first half of the 14th century and it constituted the entrance of the Church of San Salvatore from the left side at the top of the staircase that rose from the square below: the majestic appearance of the portal recalls the imposing size of the ancient Romanesque church that belonged to the Augustinians. It is a pointed portal with the remains of a tented roof and a bell; it is enclosed by jambs with voussure, decorated with plant motifs and bordered vertically by a smooth column and for the circular part by a rim of squares decorated with phytomorphic motifs. The decorations on the voussure depict the story of the Genesis, the original sin and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. The biblical passage is represented through figurative elements deriving from the plant and animal world: guilt and pain, as well as good and evil, are an admonition for the faithful. The portal stands out for its unusual appearance: the hands that hold the side imposts and the columns, on which probably lay other architectural elements of the façade, are a rare example of 14th-century “architectural sculpture”.
