The theatre is dedicated to musician Domenico Alaleona and is featured in the list of the oldest theatres of the Marches. Meeting the request of the people, a theatre was built in 1770 in a hall on the first floor of the old town hall, entirely built of wood. The structure was used so much that it deteriorated after a short time. The limited number of seats, plus the difficulty to perform restoration works, made it necessary in 1869 to design a project for a new theatre that would occupy the entire area of the old town hall, under the supervision of Giuseppe Sabbatini from Montegiorgio. The construction works were completed in 1884, with the exception of the Northwest façade that remained incomplete, and gave the theatre its current neoclassical style. The decorations, the furnishings and the paintings were completed in 1889. It was inaugurated two years later with the name of Teatro dell’ Aquila. In 1945, it was finally dedicated to Alaleona. Several improvements were made to the theatre over the years, refining its structure: a horseshoe-shaped hall with three levels of boxes and a gallery for a total of 388 seats. Over the course of time, the theatre has been the venue for several cultural events and political meetings and it has also been used as a cinema, for concerts, dance events, New Year’s parties and folk performances. In the past it mainly featured operas, while today it is mainly used as a venue for plays.
