The church probably dates back to the end of the 14th century, as the hanging arches, the shape of the door and that of the portal in the main façade suggest it was built during the Gothic period. The church underwent many transformations, evident from the closing of the small door on the left side of the façade and from the construction of the portal which constitutes the current entrance. The bell tower dates from the same period. The inscription on the bell tower and the fresco behind the altar allow to date the current shape of the church to the second half of the 16th century. The interior of the church is enriched by some frescoes: the oldest one represents a saint in a polychromatic frame, in front of the entrance there is a fresco of Madonna enthroned suckling the Child. The third fresco has a votive purpose and represents Christ on the Cross with Our Lady of Sorrows on the left and Saint James the Greater on the right; the city of Jerusalem in the background.
The Church was probably commissioned by private Montegiorgio citizens. It was state-owned until the early years of the 20th century when it was acquired by Marquess Andrea Passari and then donated to the Confraternity of Mercy to which it still belongs.
